Last week we celebrated my daughter’s second birthday and I still can’t believe my baby is TWO now!! It really feels like time goes by even faster with the second child. I always thought that a Fiesta/Mexican theme party would be such a fun idea, so I was really excited to plan a Taco Twosday Birthday Party for her.
This Taco Twosday birthday party was one of my favorite birthday parties to plan. As with all birthday parties, I really try to make them as cute and fun as possible, while not spending too much money at the same time. It’s so easy to just put all different kinds of cute party decorations into my Amazon cart and not keep track of how much everything else might cost on top of that. The majority of the party was DIY/homemade, but I’ll share some great item’s I ordered that were super affordable and festive.
Best Tips for throwing a Taco Twosday Birthday Party
The very first thing I started with when planning this Taco Twosday Fiesta, was setting a budget for myself. Now, this might sound weird to some, but I actually enjoy budgeting and making sure I don’t go too crazy buying all sorts of things, that we’ll probably only use once. I like to make my own birthday invitations in Canva, but they have super cute and affordable fiesta theme invitations on Etsy. Here is the breakdown of our Taco Twosday Party, I hope it will be helpful if you are planning a Mexican theme birthday as well.
MEXICAN THEMED FOOD
For a Taco Twosday Party, it was obvious that we were going to do a Taco Bar. I think Tacos are the perfect party food, and your guests don’t need to sit down or use utensils. It’s also a great option if you have guests that don’t eat meat or eat a certain diet, as everyone can just put whatever they want into their taco. Here is what we served:
- Corn and Flour Tacos
- Chips
- Guacamole (I made this myself out of 3 avocados, cilantro, lime, and salt. Super easy!)
- Lime wedges
- Lettuce
- Black Beans
- Cheese
- Sour Cream
- Grilled Chicken
My friend made these pretzel sticks, which were really good. All you need is pretzels and green chocolate melts. They look cute (like cactuses) and were a hit with the kids. I also cut up some watermelon for snacks and made lemonade. Everybody was happy with the food and it really wasn’t that much to prepare ahead of time. I picked up all the food at Aldi’s and it came out to less than $50. I decided to not serve alcohol this time around, as most of our guests were moms who had to drive home and I just felt like it wasn’t needed.
I found the cutest Taco Twosday Birthday Cake Ideas on Pinterest but decided last minute to try to make my own birthday cake. I followed this Cactus Cake Tutorial and it actually came out looking and tasting great! I got so many compliments on it. If you are thinking of giving this cake a try, make sure to give yourself enough time. I like to make the cake the day before the actual party, so it’s one less thing to worry about. It did take me some time to make it but it was totally worth it.
MEXICAN THEMED DECOR
I wanted to make this Taco Twosday Party as colorful as possible, which is funny as I usually don’t do too make colors at the same time. A balloon garland was a must and I found the most affordable one on Amazon. It was a whole kit and came with over 100 balloons, the strings, and the fiesta balloons as well. I recommend purchasing a balloon pump as well. It was the first time I wasn’t blowing up balloons by hand and it was such a life-changer. It did take me over an hour to put the whole garland together, but it is all the decoration you need. Once you have a balloon garland set up, there really isn’t a need for any other decoration, in my opinion. Some of the balloons started to pop because the sun was directly shining on them, which was a bit of a bummer. This could be another thing you can probably make a couple of days ahead of the party. Just make sure to keep it out of the sun and away from the kids or dog (if you have any) because they will definitely try to play with it and might pop some of the balloons. I had a whole box of party plates and utensils from previous parties so luckily I didn’t have to buy much of that. Target has a whole section for cactus and Mexican-themed plates, etc. if you are looking for Mexican-themed party supplies, such as cups, and plates.

TACO TWOSDAY ACTIVITY
A Pinata is a must for a Taco Twosday Birthday Party and all the kids were looking forward to it. I found the perfect Taco Pinata at Target and filled it with different candy. The kids had fun hitting the pinata and eating lots of candy afterward. The weather was perfect and they were all running around the yard and playing on the swing set so I didn’t have to plan any activities, the kids kept themselves busy the whole time, which was great! I wish I took a picture of the cute goodie bags we made. They had little wooden maracas in them and some treats.
I hope this post was helpful if you are thinking of planning a Taco Twosday Birthday party. One thing I learned over the last couple of years is not to get too stressed out about the party. I tend to want to throw the perfect birthday party for my kids but at the end of the day, they are happy just celebrating with their little friends and eating cake.
The decor and food options really don’t matter much to them. Also, don’t feel like you need to spend hundreds of dollars on a birthday party. Throwing a great party on a budget is totally doable and none of your guests will remember the decoration and many details anyway. And don’t feel bad if you don’t make the food or cake from scratch either. Ordering pizza and a cake is totally fine. We actually did this last year for her first birthday and everybody had a great time.
