Holidays are the perfect occasion to show your children how much you love and care for them. While it is a holiday that is mostly celebrated by couples, once we started having kids we made it a priority to celebrate it with them as well.
I love how each holiday/season provides great opportunities for family bonding and creating traditions. This is also a great chance to demonstrate how far small acts of appreciation can go. Here are some ways you can celebrate Valentine’s Day with your kids this year.

How to Celebrate Valentine’s Day
With Kids
1. Craft Valentines together
Pull out your craft bin or scrap paper and make some cute Valentine’s Cards for friends and family. No need to buy anything for this, use what you have. It is the thought that counts ;). Here are some cute Valentine’s Day Card Ideas your kids can make if you need some inspo.
2. Make Valentines Treats
Kids love snacks, obviously!? But imagine their excitement when they get to make some Valentine’s Day Snacks together with you. An easy treat we make each year are these Chocolate-covered Pretzels. These cute little Valentine’s Day Pretzels are very easy to make and require very little bit of ingredients, three to be exact. You only need mini pretzels, chocolate chips, and sprinkles for decorating.
3. Make a Valentine’s Day Breakfast
There is nothing like waking up on Valentine’s Day morning and smelling a delicious breakfast. Before kids, my husband would prepare breakfast but now, I love setting up the table the night before and then getting up a bit earlier in the morning to prepare heart-shaped pancakes or cinnamon rolls. Here are a couple of more ideas on what you could serve your family for a Valentine’s Day Breakfast:
- Heart-shaped Cinnamon Rolls – these were so easy to make and the kids loved it
- Strawberry Smoothie – A smoothie goes great with pretty much any breakfast food
- Strawberry-Shaped Cream Cheese Pastries – These look amazing and don’t require a ton of prep work
- Heart-Shaped Avocado Toast – A healthy breakfast option
- Strawberry Stuffed French Toast – These look absolutely delicious and I want to give them a try this year
- Valentine’s Cinnamon Rolls – Super easy recipe and they taste so good!!
4. Hang Valentine’s Day Decoration
My kids bring home a TON (like a ton) of crafts home from school every day, and I honestly never even know if I should keep it all or trash. For certain holidays like Valentine’s Day, I let them decorate their room and our house with their crafty creations and they love having their art displayed all over the home. It’s so sweet to see them make little hearts and pin them to the walls. This is a great option if you aren’t buying any seasonal decorations.
5. Have a Themed Valentine’s Picnic
This is a great idea for a mid-day snack. Put a big blanket and pillows on the floor and serve a few cute heart-shaped snacks. Cut sandwiches into hearts (you can use a cookie cutter) and serve with red foods such as strawberries and red grapes. Or cut cheese slices into hearts and serve with pepperoni and crackers.
6. Do good
If you know a neighbor or friend who is alone and doesn’t have anyone to celebrate Valentine’s Day with, buy a bouquet of flowers, or some chocolates and surprise them with it. I’m sure you will make their day!
7. Have a Valentine’s Day Movie Night
My kids love when we have movie nights and cuddle up on the couch as a family. Here are some great kid-friendly Valentine’s Day Movies:
- Lady and the Tramp
- The Peanuts Movie
- Cinderella
- My Girl
- Frozen
- Be my Valentine, Charlie Brown
- Winnie the Poo: A Valentine for You
8. Read Valentine’s Day Books before bed
It’s a nice tradition to read Valentine’s Day books leading up to the actual holiday and the day off. We have collected a few great books over the years, but don’t forget to also check out your local library. They always have a great collection of seasonal books. Some of our favorite books are:

9. Leave Love Notes for each other
This one is a simple but very special tradition, that your kids will remember and cherish. Leave a stack of post-its out and have each family member write a few love notes for each other. They can pin them all over the house and read them to each other throughout the day.
10. Fill A Mailbox
The night before Valentine’s Day, pick a neighbor’s (or friend’s) house and leave a note for them or fill it with Hershey’s kisses. They sure will feel loved when they take a look at their mailbox the next day!
11. Go on a Scavenger Hunt
Create a Valentine’s Day adventure by writing clues on paper hearts and hiding them all over your house. Each clue should lead participants to the next and, finally, to a special gift or message at the end. I like to use sticky notes that I cut out in heart shapes. Since my kids can’t read yet, I drew on special clues. As a final surprise, I filled a small basket with a bunch of craft supplies from the dollar store and a few chocolates.
I hope this gave you fun ideas for your Valentine’s Day celebrations with your children. Use these Valentine’s family activities to enjoy time as a family and make memories.
