Last week we threw both my daughters a Groovy Birthday Party and it was so fun! The whole hippie birthday theme was my absolute favorite theme so far. If you are planning a Groovy Birthday Party, I hope this post will give you some inspiration.

This Boho 3rd and 5th Hippie Birthday Party was so fun to plan. As with all birthday parties, I really try to make them as cute and fun as possible, while not spending too much money at the same time. It’s so easy to just put all different kinds of cute party decorations into my Amazon cart and lose track of how much I’m actually spending. The majority of the party was DIY/homemade, but I’ll share some great item’s I ordered that were super affordable and festive.
I’ve seen so many Two Groovy Birthday parties all over Instagram lately and totally loved all the cute 60’s theme party decorations and toddlers in flare leg pants. Since my daughters turned 3 and 5, I changed the theme to Peace, love, and party instead of two groovy.
Best Tips for throwing a Groovy Birthday Party
Planning Birthday Parties for my kids is a ton of fun but I also never want to spend too much money on the event, since they are still so little and only care about balloons, cake, and having fun with their little friends.
HIPPIE BIRTHDAY DECORATIONS
The decoration is what makes for great pictures and yet, if you have a great balloon arch, there isn’t that much else needed.
The Hippie Balloon Garland was from Amazon and included the balloons, the Groovy Happy Birthday Banner, as well as the three daisy flower balloons, and cost around $20. For the cupcake toppers, I bought some really affordable ones from Amazon.
Here are a couple of more fun Groovy Party Decorations I found:
- Groovy Tablecloth/Hippie Table Cover
- Hippie Daisy Party Tableware Set
- Groovy Party Hanging Swirl Decorations
For the VW Bus photo booth, I used a large piece of cardboard and painted the whole thing with acrylic paint from Michaels. The windows of the Bus I cut out with a box cutter and the kids had fun taking pictures there.
These little signs, I made in Canva. You can find these on Etsy as well. I just printed them on white paper, laminated them, and cut them out. After that, I used my hot glue gun and glued these onto bamboo skewers. It sounds like more work than it really was.
The Flowers were a Trader Joe’s find, for just $5. They are called Unicorn Baby’s Breath and looked absolutely adorable.
GROOVY BIRTHDAY FOOD
My daughter loves picnics and requested a picnic for her birthday party, which I think goes well with the hippie themed party. When I think of Woodstock and other Hippie Festivals, I always think of people sitting on blankets on the grass and enjoying simple picnic foods.
I made a couple of different sandwiches, mac and cheese bites, and pepperoni pizza sliders for the little ones. We also served Ceasar Salad, and charcuterie boards, which looked cute and were actually much easier to set up than expected.
I tried to also snap a few pictures of the dessert table before everything melted away lol. It was such a hot day, that all the treats started to sweat but nonetheless, everything was still tasty.
GROOVY BIRTHDAY ACTIVITY
A Pinata is a must at every kid party that we throw and the kids always have a great time trying to hit the pinata and then running to catch all the candy. I could not find a hippie themed pinata anywhere and ended up buying a pink one from Target, that had nothing to do with the theme, except that my daughters love everything pink. 🙂
Here are some links to really fun & groovy Pinatas:
Leaving out a Polaroid Camera for your guests to take pictures with, is such a fun idea and perfect for a 60’s theme party. We have so many polaroid pictures of the party, that I was thinking of making a little photo album for the girls, to have as a memory.
GROOVY BIRTHDAY PARTY FAVORS
We used the Groovy Birthday Cookies as Party Favors, but by the end of the day they were really mush and had melted because of the heat. If I would have to do it again, I would buy cute Boho Party Favor Bags, and fill them with fun goodies for the kids. Great Favor Bag goodies would be:
I hope this post was helpful if you are thinking of planning a Groovy Birthday Party. One thing I learned over the last couple of years is not to get too stressed out about the party. I tend to want to throw the perfect birthday party for my kids but at the end of the day, they are happy just celebrating with their little friends and eating cake.
The decor and food options really don’t matter much to them. Also, don’t feel like you need to spend hundreds of dollars on a birthday party. Throwing a great party on a budget is totally doable and none of your guests will remember the decoration and many details anyway.
